10th Dec. 2009 : POPKILLER REVIEW FROM LAZYROCKER.COM
Webzine
LazyRocker.com has just
posted a glwoing review
of the 'Popkiller' mini
album. AN excerpt
follows:
"Now with Toby Jepson on
board GUN released the
5-track EP "Popkiller".
You don't have to be
afraid that the band is
now starting to sound
like the Little Angels.
Jepson managed to sing
like he has always been
GUN's vocalist. The
first track "Let Your
Hair Down" is a typical
GUN song with a powerful
chorus, catchy hooks and
80’s synth pop sound.
But this sound is still
very refreshing. Now
that I'm writing this
review I think The
Killers might have been
very well influenced by
GUN. "Seraphina" is
another great track. The
chorus won't leave your
head. The title track
starts with a simple
synthesizer tune which
grows to another great
song with that typical
GUN sound. "Ripping Up
The Letters" is a mellow
passionate song. The EP
ends with the energetic
track "The Only". A
straight rocker."
27th Nov. 2009 : POPKILLER REVIEW FROM ROCKUNITED.COM
The big worry for some (me
included) was that, with Toby Jepson aboard and contributing,
the new Gun material would sound like Little Angels. This may
seem like an odd thing to fret about, as Little Angels were a
bloody awesome band, but if this happened it would sort of make
calling the band Gun pretty pointless.
Personally, my own fears were assuaged when I heard the free to
download song "Let Your Hair Down", which leads off this 5 track
offering. It's everything that Gun used to be: quirky, catchy
and blessed with a chorus that goes round your head for days.
Whilst Jepson sings very well (as always), he doesn't utilize
the same register as he did in his Angels days, so there's no
"Do You Wanna Riot " type screaming, just studied vocals doing
their best to fit the song. "Popkiller" is a tight EP, giving
the listener five tracks that compliment each other perfectly.
Four are upbeat, whilst the melancholy "Ripping Up The Letters"
is quite a grower, perhaps the closest to Jepson's Little Angels
days stylistically. Each of the other four tracks carries a hook
big enough to catch Moby Dick, boding extremely well for the
future. As a way to get some well missed British rock talent
back in the game, the marriage of Guiliano Gizzi, Dante Gizzi,
Gordon McNeil and Toby Jepson is a welcome one, so watch this
space because Gun are firing on all six.
GUN drummer Gordon McNeil has
asked us to host an auction for his Meinl Mb20 Series cymbal
that he used throughout last week's tour of Spain.
The cymbal was brand new at the start of the tour, but
Gordon cracked it at the final show in Barcelona. He
promptly got the whole band to sign the cymbal (see pics
below) and passed it on to me, asking if I could make sure
that ALL PROCEEDS for this auction could go to The
Beatson Oncology Centre Fund (The lead centre for the
delivery of non-surgical cancer care in the west of
Scotland).
The cymbal itself if worth over £300 and all the money is
going to a great cause, so please bid generously. To place
your bid now please
The auction will be open for one week and will close at 8pm
next Sunday evening (8th).
Good Luck - let's hope we make
loads of money for them! It's nice to give something back
sometimes...

of numbers with sheer enthusiasm. The band reciprocated by
playing another blinder. Slight change to the set list tonight

24th July 2009 : SPANISH SHOW REVIEW
Spain is still going crazy over our GUN boys, following their
show in Asturias. The performance has been receiving rave
reviews in publications and web sites all over the country.
Below is a short review by María Gómez from
www.insonoro.com, a rock-zine based in Santander. Thanks
once again to Isabel for the translation:
"...Then the Scots GUN arrived. Having reformed after splitting
more than 12 years ago, the rock band visited Asturias for their
first show in Spain and the only one they are expected to give
this year. They introduced themselves with "Hola Asturias!" and
constantly encouraged the crowd, asking them to clap along. They
had also learnt the local customs and shouted "Puxa Asturies".
To be honest, I think it was a good show, I didn't know them
before and I enjoyed it. They finished their set with their rock
classic 'Word up!'. Above all I remember their statement in the
interview they gave to La voz de Asturias in which they were
asked if rock was a fashion, to which they answered: “Rock is
not a fashion, is a state, a way of life”."
As promised, here is a translation of the Spanish interview that
we posted yesterday.
With thanks to Isabel
Interview: La Voz de Asturias - 12/07/2009.
Gun ROCK BAND: “Rock is not a fashion, it's a state, a
way of life”.
Origin: Scotland.
Background: Supported
the Rolling Stones in their Urban Jungle Tour and also Bon
Jovi. Reformed after splitting in 1997.
Formed by brothers Jools and Dante Gizzi and vocalist Mark
Rankin. Gun was one of the most successful Scottish bands in the
90s. The band split in 1997 and apart from some occasional
concerts in 1998 and 1999, they disappeared from the music
scene. Last year they reformed with Toby Jepson as vocalist,
replacing Rankin. Gun came back to Asturias yesterday to perform
in Derrame Rock , 13 years after their last visit to the region
supporting Bon Jovi in El Molinón, in what will be their only
concert in Spain, at least for now and the first time they will
be together again in our country.
You have been separated for some time and this concert is
included in your new tour together, what do you expect of this
comeback? We
want to enjoy it. We´ve got loads of new plans and we´re very
excited about being together again. It´s great to be back in
Spain and offer our Spanish fans concerts like the ones we did
ten years ago.
What do you think about festivals like Derrame Rock?
We like festivals very much, because it´s a special kind of
show. There´s a good atmosphere among all the people coming to
enjoy rock and roll. Playing with other bands is a lot of fun.
The economical situation is not very good at the moment, does
this affect the number of concerts?
When people are in a bad economic situation, rock is good
because people go back to music as a way of expression. When
people have a lot of money, they don´t care about distractions
and even less about cultural events. Traditionally, when people
are in a difficult social situation, they look into music. With
rock and roll people get distracted and forget about their
problems. So we are in the best moment we could be.
Do
you think rock is an undervalued music style? No,
we don´t agree. There are many bands, like AC/DC, that have been
on the top for more than 20 years. In the 70 s rock was
considered as the lower or marginal classes´ music. But that´s
not true. Something in our favour is that rock fans are loyal,
they are always there.
So, rock is not a fashion?
No. It´s a state, an emotion, a way of life.
What do you think about the present situation of music?
Things are quite bad, specially because of piracy. We buy all
the music we want to listen to. Although probably, if we were
not in this, we would do the same. The way of consuming music
has changed a lot. If people don´t buy our music, we don´t get
anything and that way we wouldn´t be able to continue in this
world.
And how do you manage to stay in it for so long?
Being constantly good. Keeping the standard of the songs high
and making good music. whatever the genre is, from rock to pop
or jazz, and it´s very difficult, because music is in constant
evolution.

Saturday sees GUN buddy Lauren Harris playing
alongside Queensryche and WASP...now that sounds

11th June 2009 : GUN TO RETURN TO SPAIN!!
It gives me great the pleasure to confirm
that GUN have been asked to return to Spain this summer. The
band will play the Main stage of the Open air Derrame Rock
Festival in Asturias, Northern Spain on Saturday 11 July 2009. For more info please visit
www.festivalderramerock.com.
The festival promoter was so keen to secure GUN for a return to
Spain that he added the band to an already full bill, just so he
could get them first! Now that's the kinda promoter we like!!
This is one of Spain’s biggest promoters, by the way – currently
working with AC/DC, among other huge artists.
GUN will not only be performing on the 11th, but they have been
invited to attend the whole weekend, so they will be on hand to
meet up, say hi, sign autographs and hang out with as many
people as possible. Please make sure you say "Hi Guys" if you
see the GUN lads hanging around! The Thin Thinking Things Are About To Get

11th June 2009 : YORK AND WOLVERHAMPTON SUPPORTS
Wolverhampton rockers, Voodoo Johnson
have been added to the bill for Wolverhampton gig. The boys were
really excited about playing with GUN, one of their main
influences, on the Castle Park Rock Festival, and were gutted
when it was cancelled. So, GUN are keen to ensure the boys get
their day in the sun and asked for them to be added to the
Wolverhampton gig personally. Check out
www.myspace.com/voodoojohnson
And, in our continued quest to encourage new bands in much the
same way as GUN received encouragement in the early days, we
have added Slash Vegas to the York gig
